Do alliums need to be pre chilled?

Here are some less familiar “no chill” bulbs for sunny areas in your garden: Alliums are ornamental cousins of onions that aren’t usually bothered by animals. Snowflake (leucojum) has dainty white drooping flowers similar to snowdrops (galanthus), but this bulb holds up better in the heat.

Should I refrigerate allium bulbs?

Store them in a cool, dry place with low humidity, away from heat, frost and strong sunlight at about 50°F to 70°F. Never put flower bulbs in the freezer! Poor storage conditions could cause bulbs to dry out, or to become moldy. All Allium require rich, well-draining and neutral pH soil.

Do bulbs need to be chilled before planting?

Bulbs can be pre-chilled for longer than the recommended amount of time, but not less. For best results, begin chilling the bulbs in mid to late October and plant them outdoors as soon as the chilling period is complete. This gives the bulbs some time to develop roots before they focus on flowering.

Plant bulbs approximately six weeks before local hard frosts typically start but wait until the cold weather is upon them to mulch their bulb beds. If you mulch too early, overly warm soil conditions can promote disease and mildew.
