Does it matter which way you hook up a speaker?

By Emma Powell

Does it matter which way you hook up a speaker?

If both speakers are wired the same, whether in the correct polarity or reversed polarity, there will be virtually no effect. Any changes in polarity are almost always made in an audio console or amplifier DSP, rather than in the wiring of speaker terminals.

Can I use surround speakers as front speakers?

So, yes you can use your surround speakers for front speakers. However, the point of having four front speakers is that they better distribute the sound evenly to the listener. This is why most surround speaker systems come with either two or four front channel speakers.

Where should tower speakers be placed?

Tower speakers should be placed about 2′ (or more) from the back wall. Avoid corners. Two exceptions are speakers designed for corners (rare as the albatross) and subwoofers.

Do you need a sub with tower speakers?

While high-tech bookshelf speakers combined with a subwoofer can reproduce the range of frequencies of a larger tower speaker, there is still nothing like the dynamic range a larger speaker provides. A good tower speaker will give you all the bass you need without a subwoofer.

Can you lay tower speakers on their sides?

Tower speakers should not be placed on their sides for two reasons. Firstly, if the tweeter is placed above the woofer, and the tower speaker is turned sideways, a lobing effect is created that distorts the audio experience. Secondly, the placement will often then be lowered from ear-level to the floor.

Do you need a sub with floor standing speakers?

If what you want is a pair of quality floor-standing speakers, you don’t need to get a subwoofer. If what you want includes strong low-frequency / sub-20Hz response, you need to get a subwoofer.

How do you mount speakers on a tower?

Pull at least twice as much speaker wire through the tower as you’ll actually need. When that’s done, you can use the extra speaker wire to pull the light wire back down through the tower. Run wires for both speakers at the same time, if possible. Most towers have holes in the crossbars at the spots where you’ll mount the speakers.

Can a speaker hook up to a subwoofer?

Speakers with a subwoofer. If your speakers have a subwoofer, the right speaker plugs into the subwoofer. Make sure that your subwoofer is also turned on if it has a power switch on the back.

How much wire do I need for a speaker tower?

Don’t pull too hard or fast; too much strain can cause the light wire to separate from the speaker wire. Pull at least twice as much speaker wire through the tower as you’ll actually need. When that’s done, you can use the extra speaker wire to pull the light wire back down through the tower.

Where do I plug my speakers in my room?

This takes experimentation in your room: whether you plug one of the rear ports, both of the rear ports (or however many ports the speaker has) etc. It’s something you can adjust and play with to get better bottom-end balance if you use port plugs and the speaker’s got to be very close to the rear wall or side wall.

Where do the speakers go to connect to the AMP?

The wires would run from one black connector to the other (the right side of the photo below). But since we’re using an external amplifier for the speakers, the speaker wires from the car get diverted to the amp — that’s the bundle of wires on the bottom plug heading left to the amplifier.

What do I need to hook up my speakers?

Start connecting the speaker wires to the terminals, which you can find behind the speakers. There are two types of wire terminals, namely the tabs and the circular connections. Tabs have small pieces of colored plastic under it, with holes designed to accommodate the wires.
