How big should an above ground pool deck be?

By David Perry

How big should an above ground pool deck be?

A good rule of thumb is for a deck’s square footage to be at least the same as your pool’s square footage. To illustrate with a simple example, say a rectangle pool is 15 feet wide by 30 feet long. With a 450-square-foot pool, the deck should also be at least 450 square feet.

How much space should be between deck and pool?

The maximum gap between the decking and the pool coping is generally 3/4 inch. Slip resistance, gaps between boards and slope of the deck may also be regulated depending on the local codes. These design requirements should also be considered for any deck adjacent swimming pools or hot tubs, whether in or above ground.

How do I calculate my deck around my pool?

deck material needed: Multiply length x width. (Area = length x width). Example: A 14×28′ swimming pool = 14×28 = 392 sq. ft.

Should pool deck be above or below top rail?

The water level for an above ground swimming pool is about six inches below the top rail. Adding a deck over the top rail can now make the water level more than eight inches below the deck. This may be OK for you, but you also may not like being too far from the water.

How wide are pool decks?

According to the Swimming Pool Ideas website, pool decks should be at least 4 feet wide. Pool decks that are at least 4 feet wide provide a safe surface for entering or exiting the pool. Municipal codes for residential pool deck generally require 4 foot wide decks.

When you have a solid plan, you can mark the layout with strings and batter boards made from 2-foot furring strips and screws. See Making and Using Batter Boards assembly instructions. Place the batter boards beyond the corners of your planned area. Tie strings to them marking the outer edges of your deck.
