How do you know if a tweeter is bad?

By Daniel Rodriguez

How do you know if a tweeter is bad?

Basically, play that tone at low volume and put your head holes right near the tweeter. If it is not making any sound, it is blown. If it does make sound, it might be partially damaged or work fine. If it is loud and clear, sounds like your other speakers then you are OK.

Can you fix a bad tweeter?

If the voice coils are overheated, then diaphragm replacement (or tweeter replacement) is your only option. As for future failures, there are several techniques to protect tweeters, but all have audible consequences. The options range from fuses to specially design circuit breakers and thermistors.

Why do speakers distort at high volume?

As volume increases, the drivers extend further and faster. The increase in movement causes heat inside the speaker. If the speaker components are poor quality, then heat damage may occur. Ultimately this leads to distortion.

What causes a blown tweeter?

Driving an amplifier to clipping(distortion) or too low of a crossover point to filter low frequencies. You can burn out a 100 W tweeter with 20 watts if the amplifier runs out of headroom.

How do you know if a speaker is good?

The higher the sensitivity rating, the louder your speaker is. An average speaker comes with a sensitivity of around 87 dB to 88 dB. A speaker with a sensitivity rating over 90 dB is considered excellent.

Play music, check for A/C voltage between the output (tweet or mid) on the crossover. If voltage is 0, then you know its dead.
