What causes AC drain to back up?

By Emma Powell

What causes AC drain to back up?

As indoor air circulates through the evaporator coil, dust, dirt and other airborne particles can be trapped by moisture. Build-up of this debris can be carried off as condensate drains from the coil. Over time, it can become trapped in your condensate drain line, causing blockage.

Where does AC drain from?

Your air conditioner has a condensate drain line that runs from the indoor unit to the outside of your home. You’ll find a white PVC or copper pipe located near your outdoor unit—this is where the drain line ends.

How fast should AC drain?

In an arid climate where relative humidity remains well below 50 percent most of the time, the evaporator coil in a residential central air conditioner will send about about 5 gallons of water down the drain per day. In humid climates, however, the drain pipe may convey as much as 20 gallons per day.

What causes water to drain from a central air conditioner?

Central air conditioners dump hot air and water condensate outside the home. The water that drains from a central air conditioning unit is condensate that has accumulated on the cooling coils within the unit.

What causes condensation to build up in Attic air conditioner?

The condensation drain line is plugged. Air handling units in attics should have a secondary condensation pan in case the primary condensation pan overflows. Occasionally, the secondary condensation pan will also clog and not drain. Water builds up in the ceiling, and eventually, there will be a drip if the homeowner is lucky.

Where is the drain on a window air conditioner?

Insert the short drain pipe provided with your window air conditioner into the drain hole on the bottom or the back of your unit. Some units may have a permanent drain pipe attached to the chassis.

How big of a drain does an air conditioner have?

A central air system usually has a 1 1/4-inch drain that extends through the wall, and it’s usually too long to clean this way, but you can do the job with a wet/dry vacuum cleaner.

Why does my AC unit have a drain line?

The AC condensate drain line removes the water released when the evaporator in your AC unit converts refrigerant from a liquid to a gas. (Learn more about your HVAC system here ).

Can a clogged AC drain cause a disaster?

It’s true, and if you’ve ever experienced a clogged AC drain that has over-flown into your home’s interior you probably have first hand experience with the disaster and damage all that water can create.

Where is the AC system located in the attic?

Since the AC system is typically located in the attic, it’s very close to the plumbing vent that exits through your home’s roof and some builders will simply tie the AC drain line into the plumbing vent (which rarely clogs).

Can a condensate drain line be terminated over a gutter?

So, if we are supposed to drain the primary into the drainage system of the house, can we terminate the drain line over a gutter and let the water fall into the gutter, where it will continue to the ground to an approved area? CMC 310.3 says condensate waste pipes must be made from materials designed to work with that type of condensate drainage.
