When to dethatch aerate and fertilize?

The best time to dethatch your lawn is when it’s actively growing and the soil is moderately moist. For cool-season grasses, that’s early spring or early fall. For warm-season grasses, dethatch in late spring through early summer (after the second mowing).

Should I Dethatch before fertilizer?

Because you fertilize your yard immediately after dethatching, it is best to wait until your yard has “greened” up before applying nitrogen. If you fertilize while your grass is still dormant, you encourage weeds to compete with your grass. Too much nitrogen will exacerbate your thatch problem in the future.

How long after fertilizer can I Dethatch?

Don’t fertilize the lawn for at least 45 days prior to dethatching. If you are planning to apply preemergence herbicides, do so after dethatching. Otherwise, the herbicides may bind with the thatch and decrease their effectiveness.

Should you dethatch every year?

Thatch builds up over time, so it’s not necessary to dethatch every year. Plan on dethatching every five years or so if your lawn needs it. You might want to give your lawn a quick check every year just to see how much thatch has accumulated.

Can I seed and fertilize at the same time?

When seeding a lawn, you should never apply the fertilizer and seed together. This can cause an uneven distribution of the materials resulting in patchy areas or seedlings burned by excess fertilizer. It is best to spread the fertilizer just prior to planting the seed.

How many times should you dethatch?

Almost every lawn needs dethatching about once a year, or whenever the thatch reaches a thickness of about 1/2 inch. To check, just work your fingers into the grass and note the depth of the thatch layer. Dethatch cool-season grasses in fall, warm-season types in early spring.

Can you dethatch too much?

Excessive thatch can take more than one removal session, and removing too much at once can damage grass roots. Dethatching rakes are good for light thatch and general thatch maintenance on small lawn areas.
