Why does my car rapidly click when I try to start it?

Rapid clicking noises when trying to start a car usually means the battery is dead, or has too little stored energy to fully engage the starter motor. The clicking sound is caused by the solenoid and starter motor gear(s) continuously trying, and failing to make a connection with the corresponding gears on the engine.
