Light Materials If you have an especially big planter to fill, light, bulky materials are your best bet. Examples include plastic drink containers, milk jugs, crushed soda cans, foam packing materials and plastic or foam take-out containers.

Do planters need to be filled to the top?

Potting soil is not cheap, so whether you are using a large planter as a statement piece for a smaller plant or for a large tree, in most cases you do not need to fill the whole planter with soil. Pot fillers are also a great opportunity to recycle non-biodegradable trash like plastic.

How high should the dirt be in a planter?
